Faith2Share member iServe Africa runs a leadership development programme for new graduates. At the heart of this programme is apprenticeship: a model of training which aims to help young Christians develop a deeper understanding of the gospel, mission and ministry through placements in a church or Christian organisation.
Peter Muturi Kimotho is a second year apprentice at St Helen’s Church in London and he reflects on his time with iServe.
The iServe apprenticeship has, he says, completely changed his view of life and Christian ministry. ‘Through iServe Africa I have grown in my understanding of the Christian faith, been challenged to think hard through training … and … I have enjoyed a diverse experience in Christian ministry.’
‘Before joining iServe,’ Peter says, ‘I would have called myself a Christian, but I am not sure I would have articulated what that meant well enough. I was influenced by ‘Christian’ teachings from diverse sources and couldn’t tell which were faithful to the Gospel message. iServe took me as the child I was and … the Bible was opened for me to understand my faith and Christian ministry better.’
While on his second year of the apprenticeship programme at St Helen’s, London, Peter has led Bible studies for city workers and youth Bible studies. ‘Throughout this period,’ Peter says, ‘I have learnt what it means to fully depend on God, to love people and to see how God works as His word is proclaimed.’
